Black Romance: So Much to Learn (and Enjoy)

I listen to a lot of audio books for free through my library on Libby. A year or so ago, I wanted something light, easy, & enjoyable, yet still part of my project of opening my world to lives I have been kept from really knowing about.

What I landed on: the genre known as Black Romance.

I have learned so much! And enjoyed so much. You can find many recommended lists online. Here are two of my favorites, both happen to be trilogies.

Alyssa Cole: The Loyal League: Some serious Civil War research went into this series. The stories are good: I learned about Black Union spies (women & men), the role Cuba played, communication details I couldn’t have imagined, & what it could have been like for a formerly enslaved person to fight for the North.

Talia Hibbert: The Brown Sisters Autism, tattoos, overachievers, fibromyalgia, mixed race relationships, consent (so good!), wealth, independence, great sex scenes, and sisterhood…these books have it all. Sharp, contemporary, and realistic, I’m bummed there aren’t 10 Brown sisters!
